Entre os grandes nomes que escolheram Zurique para viver ou trabalhar estão Albert Einstein, James Joyce, Carl Gustav Jung e Thomas Mann, todos profundamente ligados ao espírito intelectual e artístico que permeia esta cidade suíça. E, se no livro de notas levava uma Zurique considerada como uma Disneylândia para jovens banqueiros — em que os suíços controlam a vida ao milímetro e vivem dentro do seu quadrado, na opinião de muitos locais, de forma um pouco egoísta e muitas vezes fechada —, Zurique não deixa de ser uma cidade deliciosamente pequena, mas muito internacional. E isso muda todo o cenário de uma das cidades mais desejadas e eficientes do mundo.
Among the great names who have chosen Zurich to live or work are Albert Einstein, James Joyce, Carl Gustav Jung and Thomas Mann, all deeply connected to the intellectual and artistic spirit that permeates this Swiss city. And if in the notebook I took in a Zurich considered to be a Disneyland for young bankers – where the Swiss control life to the millimetre and live within their square, in the opinion of many locals, in a somewhat selfish and often closed way – Zurich is nonetheless a delightfully small but very international city. And that changes the whole picture of one of the most desirable and efficient cities in the world.
Apesar de ser a maior cidade da Suíça, Zurique é muitas vezes apontada como uma simples paragem entre o aeroporto e as estâncias de Inverno. Mas esta cidade oferece um sentimento de aldeia bem conservada, ainda por cima abençoada pela magia do Lago de Zurique e o postal lindíssimo das montanhas. Perfeccionista e limpa a régua e esquadro, Zurique é uma cidade de vivência suave, onde não escutamos qualquer tipo de reacção emocional no trânsito e conseguimos acertar relógios pela pontualidade dos transportes públicos. Transportes esses surrealmente limpos, imaculados e pontuais, sem excepção e por isso notável no padrão mundial.
Despite being Switzerland’s largest city, Zurich is often seen as just a stopover between the airport and the winter resorts. But this city offers a well-preserved village feel, blessed by the magic of Lake Zurich and the postcard beauty of the mountains. Perfectionist and squeaky clean, Zurich is a city of gentle living, where you don’t hear any kind of emotional reaction in traffic and can set your clocks by the punctuality of public transport. Transport that is surreally clean, immaculate and punctual, without exception and therefore outstanding by world standards.
Os suíços cuidam muito bem das suas cidades, estradas, espaços públicos, parques e jardins. O sentido comunitário e o uso de bens partilhados é regulado por normas que todos respeitam. Essa atenção ao colectivo reflecte o respeito pelas regras de convivência e, apesar das famosas denúncias discretas, faz com que Zurique seja uma das cidades mais organizadas — e, por isso, mais fáceis e desejadas — do mundo.
Para quem tem assistido, de coração apertado, à fase desafiante que Lisboa atravessa, Zurique é uma lufada de ar fresco, um exemplo de civilidade, que mostra ao mundo que imaginar uma cidade coerente, limpa, preservada e sincronizada não é, afinal, nenhuma utopia ou ilusão.
The Swiss take very good care of their cities, roads, public spaces, parks and gardens. The sense of community and the use of shared goods is regulated by rules that everyone respects. This attention to the collective reflects respect for the rules of coexistence and, despite the famous discreet denunciations, makes Zurich one of the most organised – and therefore easiest and most desirable – cities in the world.
For those of us who have been watching Lisbon’s challenging phase from the sidelines, Zurich is a breath of fresh air, an example of civility that shows the world that imagining a coherent, clean, preserved and synchronised city is, after all, no utopia or illusion.

Para organizar a estadia, sugiro que o leitor analise previamente a agenda cultural da Opernhaus Zürich e da Tonhalle Zürich. Sei que é peculiar, mas é sempre o meu ponto de partida para uma viagem: os espectáculos culturais, sejam óperas, bailados ou concertos, neste caso a respirarem no coração da cidade.
To organise your stay, I suggest that you look at the cultural agenda of the Opernhaus Zürich and the Tonhalle Zürich beforehand. I know it’s peculiar, but it’s always my starting point for a trip: the cultural shows, be they operas, ballets or concerts, in this case breathing in the heart of the city.
A Opernhaus Zürich e a Tonhalle Zürich são duas das principais instituições culturais, com histórias ricas no mundo da música. A Opernhaus Zürich, inaugurada em 1891, foi projectada pelos arquitectos Fellner & Helmer e passou por uma importante renovação após um incêndio em 1920. A sua Orquestra da Ópera de Zurique é fundamental nas apresentações de ópera e bailado, e o local continua a ser um dos principais centros de ópera na Europa, com acústica e produções sublimes. Já a Tonhalle Zürich, inaugurada em 1895, tornou-se um centro de excelência para a música sinfónica. Fundada em 1868, é um pilar da cena musical da cidade, com uma programação variada de concertos clássicos e contemporâneos.
The Opernhaus Zürich and the Tonhalle Zürich are two leading cultural institutions with rich histories in the world of music. The Opernhaus Zürich, which opened in 1891, was designed by architects Fellner & Helmer and underwent a major renovation after a fire in 1920. Its Zurich Opera Orchestra is instrumental in opera and ballet performances, and the venue remains one of the main opera centres in Europe, with sublime acoustics and productions. The Tonhalle Zürich, opened in 1895, has become a centre of excellence for symphonic music. Founded in 1868, it is a pillar of the city’s music scene, with a varied programme of classical and contemporary concerts.
Para sonhar, o hotel Baur au Lac é uma referência no património cultural da cidade, por ser a morada onde Alfred Nobel conheceu Bertha von Suttner, pacifista que influenciou sua decisão na criação do Nobel da Paz — algo que faz tanto sentido nestes tempos planetários. Mesmo que não opte pelo Baur au Lac, almoçar no Marguita, jantar na Brasserie Bauer’s ou tomar chá no The Hall, todos no hotel, será sempre uma experiência histórica marcante na sua passagem por Zurique.
To sleep, the Baur au Lac hotel is a landmark in the city’s cultural heritage, as it is the address where Alfred Nobel met Bertha von Suttner, the pacifist who influenced his decision to create the Nobel Peace Prize – something that makes so much sense in these planetary times. Even if you don’t opt for Baur au Lac, lunch at Marguita, dinner at Brasserie Bauer’s or tea at The Hall, all of which are in the hotel, will always be a remarkable historical experience during your stay in Zurich.
Outro marco que procuro sempre são os cafés antigos sobreviventes, e o Café Odeon é uma visita obrigatória. Inaugurado em 1900, a morada de antigas tertúlias é um elegante ponto de encontro que, ao longo dos anos, atraiu intelectuais, artistas e políticos. A atmosfera clássica, com pormenores Art Nouveau, faz do Odeon um refúgio de café de qualidade aliado à história cultural de Zurique. Frequentado por personalidades como James Joyce e Albert Einstein, o café mantém o charme de sua época e oferece a nós, viajantes, uma experiência inesquecível — especialmente se conseguir conversar com suíços locais, na minha experiência, bem criativa e fora da caixa, contrariando todos os mitos.
Another landmark I always look out for are the surviving old cafés, and Café Odeon is a must-visit. Inaugurated in 1900, the home of old tertulias is an elegant meeting place that has attracted intellectuals, artists and politicians over the years. The classic atmosphere, with Art Nouveau details, makes the Odeon a haven for quality coffee combined with Zurich’s cultural history. Frequented by personalities such as James Joyce and Albert Einstein, the café retains the charm of its time and offers us travellers an unforgettable experience – especially if you can strike up a conversation with the local Swiss, in my experience very creative and out of the box, contrary to all myths.
Outro endereço único é o Kronenhalle. Fundado em 1924 por Frieda Wengi, uma mulher visionária, o restaurante tornou-se um dos mais icónicos de Zurique. Com gastronomia local, Wengi criou um ambiente singular ao integrar obras de arte de grandes artistas, como Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso e Ferdinand Hodler, transformando o restaurante numa galeria onde se come a poucos centímetros dos quadros, curiosamente, sem qualquer proteção de segurança.
Another unique address is the Kronenhalle. Founded in 1924 by Frieda Wengi, a visionary woman, the restaurant has become one of the most iconic in Zurich. With local cuisine, Wengi created a unique atmosphere by integrating works of art by great artists such as Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso and Ferdinand Hodler, transforming the restaurant into a gallery where you can eat just a few centimetres from the paintings, curiously without any security protection.
Também o Zunfthaus zur Waag. Num edifício histórico que remonta ao século XIII e que estava originalmente associado à corporação dos ferreiros da cidade, “Zunfthaus” significa “casa da corporação”, e o restaurante preserva essa ligação, lembrando o papel dos ferreiros nas reuniões profissionais e políticas da época. Hoje, o local mantém a tradição histórica, oferecendo uma experiência gastronômica suíça num ambiente elegante, cultural e simbólico da Zurique medieval.
Also the Zunfthaus zur Waag. In a historic building dating back to the 13th century and originally associated with the city’s blacksmiths’ guild, “Zunfthaus” means “guild house”, and the restaurant preserves this connection, recalling the role of blacksmiths in the professional and political meetings of the time. Today, the place maintains the historical tradition, offering a Swiss gastronomic experience in an elegant, cultural and symbolic setting of medieval Zurich.
Em Zurique, as experiências gourmet são excepcionais, com delicatessens renomados como Jelmoli e Globus, dos melhores que já testemunhei na Europa. Passear pela Bahnhofstrasse, considerada a avenida mais cara do mundo, é uma experiência que foge ao sentido de fausto e transmite uma sensação de grande civilidade discreta, a melhor de todas. A experiência é especial porque sentimos a discrição Suiça, sem espalhafato e isso numa rua de lojas luxuosas é sublime.
In Zurich, the gourmet experiences are exceptional, with renowned delicatessens such as Jelmoli and Globus, some of the best I’ve seen in Europe. Strolling along Bahnhofstrasse, considered the most expensive avenue in the world, is an experience that eschews the sense of glamour and conveys a feeling of great discreet civility, the best of all. The experience is special because you feel Swiss discretion, without the fuss, and this is sublime in a street full of luxury shops.
Para os amantes de arte e história, o mirante de Lindenhof, as igrejas Grossmünster – esta associada a Ulrich Zwingli, figura central da Reforma Protestante – e Fraumünster, com seus famosos vitrais de Marc Chagall, e a St. Peter Kirche, e a James Joyce Foundation são paragens imperdíveis. No bairro do Niederdorf – que faz parte do Altstadt (Cidade Velha) de Zurique – vai ficar impressionado como os suiços preservam o património das suas lojas, causa que me indigna há anos em Lisboa. Todas as lojas respiram perfeição, não há nada fora do sitio e isso é impressionante.
For art and history lovers, the Lindenhof viewpoint, the Grossmünster church – the latter associated with Ulrich Zwingli, a central figure in the Protestant Reformation – and Fraumünster, with its famous stained glass windows by Marc Chagall, the St Peter Kirche and the James Joyce Foundation are unmissable stops. In the Niederdorf neighbourhood – which is part of Zurich’s Altstadt (Old Town) – you’ll be amazed at how the Swiss preserve the heritage of their shops, something I’ve been indignant about for years in Lisbon. All the shops breathe perfection, there’s nothing out of place and that’s impressive.
A Niederdorfstrasse, a rua mais movimentada na margem direita do Rio Limmat, é cheia de vida, com diversos restaurantes e bares, incluindo o icônico Café Voltaire, berço do Dadaísmo, movimento que surgiu como uma reação às atrocidades da Primeira Guerra Mundial, um detalhe que reforça o impacto cultural de Zurique na época. Na Münstergasse, não perca a oportunidade de beber o chocolate quente do Café & Conditorei 1842 e explorar as iguarias da H. Schwarzenbach.
Niederdorfstrasse, the busiest street on the right bank of the River Limmat, is full of life, with numerous restaurants and bars, including the iconic Café Voltaire, the birthplace of Dadaism, a movement that emerged as a reaction to the atrocities of the First World War, a detail that reinforces Zurich’s cultural impact at the time. On Münstergasse, don’t miss the opportunity to sip hot chocolate at Café & Conditorei 1842 and explore the delicacies at H. Schwarzenbach.
Porque Zurique é das cidades mais seguras do mundo, uma ida à esquadra da polícia porque ser invulgar. O Giacometti-Halle escondido no hall de entrada é uma das obras de arte mais importantes da cidade, um fresco vibrante concluído em 1926, conhecido como Blüemlihalle, que se traduz como “hall das flores”. As formas e padrões florais abstractos foram pintados no teto abobadado da estação por Augusto Giacometti, primo do escultor Alberto Giacometti, mais conhecido pelas suas estatuas de corpo esguio.
Because Zurich is one of the safest cities in the world, a trip to the police station is unusual. The Giacometti-Halle hidden in the entrance hall is one of the city’s most important works of art, a vibrant fresco completed in 1926, known as the Blüemlihalle, which translates as ‘hall of flowers’. The abstract floral shapes and patterns were painted on the vaulted ceiling of the station by Augusto Giacometti, cousin of the sculptor Alberto Giacometti, best known for his slender-bodied statues.
Com vista para o centro, o The Dolder Grand, um dos mais prestigiados hotéis e spas de Zurique, que por ter uma longa história desde 1899, e intervenção posterior do arquitecto Norman Foster, vale uma manhã passada spa, com vista para o Lago de Zurique e as montanhas, seguido de um brunch.

À beira do lago e para sentir a famosa qualidade de vida de Zurique é obrigatório um passeio até o centro. Na experiência um almoço na varanda do Ficherstube Zürihorn, a visita ao Chinagarten e ao Le Pavillion Le Corbusier. Se tiver tempo, faça num pequeno desvio, uma visita ao The Monocle Shop & Café, icónico na cidade.
By the lake and to get a feel for Zurich’s famous quality of life, a stroll to the centre is a must. The experience includes lunch on the terrace of the Ficherstube Zürihorn, a visit to the Chinagarten and Le Pavillion Le Corbusier. If you have time, take a short diversions to visit the city’s iconic The Monocle Shop & Café.

A instituição também está ligada à história intelectual de Zurique, cidade onde Albert Einstein viveu enquanto estudava na ETH Zürich (Politécnico de Zurique), marcando o espiriro cientifico da cidade. Até 16 de Fevereiro tem uma exposição imperdível de Marina Abramović.

The institution is also linked to the intellectual history of Zurich, the city where Albert Einstein lived while studying at the ETH Zürich (Zurich Polytechnic), marking the scientific spirit of the city. Until 16 February there is an unmissable exhibition by Marina Abramović.
Se ainda tiver tempo, não deixe de beber um café na biblioteca do Hotel B2, provar um fondue suíço numa cabine de neve no terraço do Widder Hotel, ou beber um leite de matcha no The Matcha Club.
O escritor Suiço, Robert Walser escreveu que todas as boas mentes passariam algum dia a Zurique. E mais do que um dos maiores centros financeiros e do mundo, a cidade nomeia-se por ser um polo cultural que atraiu algumas das mentes mais brilhantes e criativas da história. Mentes importantes para de alguma maneira decifrar o encanto da cidade Suiça, que mesmo com a irreversível factura do tempo, tanto conquista viajantes de mundo a permanecer, alguns anos das suas vidas.
If you still have time, don’t miss a coffee in the library of the B2 Hotel, a Swiss fondue in a snow cabin on the terrace of the Widder Hotel, or a matcha latte at The Matcha Club.
The Swiss writer Robert Walser wrote that every good mind would someday pass through Zurich. And more than just one of the world’s biggest financial centres, the city has made a name for itself as a cultural hub that has attracted some of the brightest and most creative minds in history. Minds that are important for somehow deciphering the charm of the Swiss city, which even with the irreversible toll of time, wins over world travellers to stay for a few years of their lives.
