I already had my eyes on Torel Palace Porto, the new five-star boutique hotel, as it was about to open its doors in the heart of our ‘Invicta’. The new address promises a hotel in one of the most dazzling old palaces in Porto, the Palacete Campos Navarro, which, dating from 1861, is one of the most impressive examples of the romantic architecture period in Porto.
With its signature of creating hotels with original narratives, the Torel Boutiques group likes to stimulate city travellers and this is what happened on one of my last stays in Porto. No coração da cidade, localizado bem perto dos Aliados, Rua das Flores e Ribeira a nova morada faz as delícias de quem gosta de percorrer o Porto a pé. O conceito tem dois edifícios, um na Rua Mouzinho da Silveira, um charmoso e surpreendente palacete do século XIX (onde fiquei) e onde se encontram as áreas comuns e os doze quartos e suites, e ainda um prédio antigo com onze apartamentos para quem preferir um espaço ainda maior.
In the heart of the city, located very close to Aliados, Rua das Flores and Ribeira, the new address is a delight for those who like to walk around in Porto. The concept has two buildings, one on Rua Mouzinho da Silveira, a charming and surprising palace from the 19th century (where I stayed). Here are the common areas, twelve rooms and suites and also an old building with eleven apartments for those who prefer even more space.
E escrevo maior porque o hotel é rasgado com janelas enormes, tectos altos, que fazem justiça às enorme escadaria e claraboia. A inspiração? Os nossos Descobrimentos e as rotas marítimas e comerciais percorridas pelos navegadores portugueses.
As descobertas exóticas são por isso o tema do Torel 1884 – Suites & Apartments, elogiando assim a riqueza dos continentes por onde andaram os Portugueses de outro tempo. Os tons bege-areia, terracota, verde azeitona, azul marinho ou castanho-café escolhidos pela Nano Design abraçam o projecto de arquitectura de Miguel Nogueira na presença de obras de Jorge Curval (não adoro confesso, mas estão bem inseridos no espaço) e de João Pedro Rodrigues na entrada
Cada continente é homenageado num dos três pisos. África no restaurante e nas duas suites ‘Salomão’ e ‘Malagueta’. O primeiro piso com referências à América do Sul piso, com asas suites ‘Madeiras exóticas, ‘Pássaros exóticos’, ‘Café’, ‘Cana de Açúcar’ e ‘Tabaco’. O segundo andar mergulha na beleza do continente asiático com as suites ‘Chá’, ‘Porcelanas’, ‘Sedas’, ‘Tapeçarias’ e ‘Especiarias’, a respirarem património oriental.
And I write bigger because the hotel is ripped open with huge windows, high ceilings, which do justice to the huge staircase and skylight. The inspiration? The Portuguese Discoveries and the maritime and commercial routes traveled by Portuguese navigators.
Exotic discoveries are therefore the theme of Torel 1884 – Suites & Apartments, thus praising the richness of the continents where the Portuguese used to travel. The beige-sand, terracotta, olive green, navy blue or coffee-brown tones chosen by Nano Design embrace the architectural project of Miguel Nogueira in the presence of art works by Jorge Curval (I don’t love to say it, but they are well inserted into the space) and João Pedro Rodrigues at the entrance
Each continent is honoured on one of the three floors. Africa in the restaurant and in the ‘Salomão’ and ‘Malagueta’ suites. The first-floor references South America, with the winged suites ‘Exotic woods,’ Exotic birds ‘,’ Coffee ‘,’ Sugar Cane ‘and’ Tobacco ‘. While the second floor immerses itself in the beauty of the Asian continent with the ‘Tea’, ‘Porcelain’, ‘Silks’, ‘Tapestries’ and ‘Spices’ suites, oozing their oriental heritage.
Porque gosto de voos altos o meu quarto foi o dos ‘Pássaros Exóticos’ mas deixo a sugestão do Chá ou das Porcelanas, os meus preferidos ao lado dos pássaros.
Because I’m addicted to open wings, my room was that of the ‘Exotic Birds’ but I leave the suggestion of Tea or Porcelain, my favorites next to birds suite.
O restaurante Bartolomeu Wine Bistro no piso térreo é um elogio a Bartolomeu Dias, navegador português do Séc. XV, colocado como representante dos grandes exploradores portugueses. Ideal para petiscar entre a Tábua de petiscos portugueses, Paté de Champagne caseiro a minha recomendação vai para a Salada de cogumelos, cevada e espinafres.
The Bartolomeu Wine Bistro restaurant on the ground floor honours Bartolomeu Dias, the 15th Century Portuguese navigator, known as one of the two great Portuguese explorers. It is an ideal spot to snack on a board of Portuguese ‘nibbles’ or home-made Paté de Champagne. My personal recommendation, however, goes to a Salad of mushrooms, barley and spinach.
Sob a coroa da claraboia há ainda uma biblioteca – sala de estar, com um ‘honesty bar’ a respirar dentro de um malão de viagem antiga que me lembro a frase de um dos filmes de Bertolucci que há uma grande diferença entre viajantes e turistas. Sim são coisas bem diferentes e eu viajante claramente recomendo o Torel 1884 como um dos mais deliciosos hotéis para dormir no Porto.
Under the crown of the skylight there is also a library – a living room, with an ‘honesty bar’ tucked inside of an old suitcase that brought to my mind the phrase from one of Bertolucci’s films: that there is a big difference between travellers and tourists. Yes, these are very different things and as a traveller, I undoubtedly recommend Torel 1884 as one of the most delicious hotels in which to sleep over in Porto.
