Não é nenhum segredo que sou completamente apaixonada pelos Açores e que a minha alma faz questão de lá regressar todos os anos. O arquipélago dá-me sempre a dimensão de não duvidar, por nenhum momento, que seremos sempre uma alma com um corpo e não o contrário.
It is no secret that I am totally in love with the Azores and that my soul makes a point of returning there every year. The archipelago always reminds me not to doubt for a moment that we will always be a soul with a body and not the other way around.
Depois de dez dias em Julho a bordo de um veleiro a fazer o triângulo dourado – experiência que partilharei depois deste artigo – regressei em Setembro a esta morada tão especial. Já conheço a ilha de São Miguel tão bem, que já não me sinto a perder nada, se ficar quatro dias a giboiar (adoro esta palavra) na companhia de boa literatura e revistas por desfolhar. Numa morada com uma piscina de água salgada e um jacuzzi faço companhia a uma vista idílica, só para mim, enquanto os turistas do hotel mergulhar pelas lagoas e piscinas quentes desta ilha açoriana. E a serenidade convida, se ainda não conhece bem ilha vai ser um sacrifício passar o dia longe deste pequeno paraíso.
After ten days in July aboard a sailboat navigating the golden triangle – an experience I will share after this article – I returned to this very special place in September. I already know the island of São Miguel so well, that I no longer feel like I am missing anything, if I spend four days doing nothing in the company of good literature and magazines. In an abode with a saltwater pool and a jacuzzi, in the company of good literature and magazines for flipping through, in a dwelling with a saltwater pool and jacuzzi, and an idyllic view just for me as the hotel tourists plunge into the lagoons and hot pools of this Azorean island.
Situado na costa sul da Ilha de São Miguel, em Lagoa, o Sul Villas & Spa é o primeiro hotel a solo de Rodrigo Herédia, que transformou um terreno de pasto num dos hotéis mais especiais do arquipélago. Não é novidade que todos trememos com o turismo desenfreado de Portugal dos últimos anos e que a abertura de hotéis de muitos quartos, aterroriza todos os apaixonados dos Açores. Por isso o meu enorme entusiasmo, sempre que mergulho numa morada que respeita e eleva a beleza natural da ilha.
Situated on the South coast of São Miguel Island, in Lagoa, Sul Villas & Spa is Rodrigo Herédia’s first hotel as a solo project, which has transformed grassland into one of the archipelago’s most special hotels. It is no secret that we have all /wooried about Portugal’s rampant tourism in recent years and the opening of multi-room hotels terrifies all lovers of the Azores. So it is of great joy to me, whenever I dive into a home that respects and elevates the natural beauty of the island.
Ainda em ‘soft opening’ e com uma vista deslumbrante sobre o Atlântico, onde podermos ver recortada (num bom dia de Sol) a ilha de Santa Maria, as linhas contemporâneas e os espaços amplos deixam esta morada fundir-se com a beleza do horizonte. Assim de repente quando entramos não temos bem a noção do paraíso e por isso o efeito surpresa quando entramos no hall. A surpresa respira num edifício branco imaculado que foi, numa primeira sensação, coberto pela minha imaginação, com vegetação, possibilidade que só o tempo poderá tornar realidade.
Still in its soft opening and with a breath-taking view of the Atlantic, allowing us to see (on a good sunny day) the island of Santa Maria, the contemporary lines and the wide spaces let the premisesmerge with the beauty of the horizon. As we enter, little are we aware of paradise and therefore the surprise when we enter the hall. The surprise comes in an immaculate white building that was, at first glance, fuelled by my imagination, covered with vegetation. A possibility that only time can make a reality.
A equipa é assim a prova viva do que mais adoro nos Açores, além da vibração e da natureza nestas ilhas: a simpatia das pessoas. The team is living proof of what I love most about the Azores, besides the feeling and nature of these islands, That is, the friendliness of the people. The reception and all the women take care of the clients at Sul Villas & Spa, elevates the female to her best, with a team that exudes the gratitude of working in a home with a magnificent view.
O projecto de arquitectura assinado de Rui Sabino de Sousa da SAL Works, tem certamente o espírito do mar do proprietário e também surfista – Rodrigo Herédia conquistou em 1993 o título de Campeão Nacional e em 1997 o de Campeão Europeu de Surf – que fez questão de deixar o seu cunho nos melhores cantos da casa.
Com uma vista incrível para a Baía de Santa Cruz, com o azul do Atlântico abraçado a Igreja de Santa Cruz, datada do século XVIII, os sinos tocam a cada quinze minutos. A delícia do som que completa a orquestra do cenário, abre os panos às três tipologias diferentes de alojamento, as Júnior Suites com e sem piscina e as Prime Suites, estas numa tipologia mais alta e com mais privacidade na área exterior.
Rui Sabino de Sousa’s SAL Works architectural project certainly has the sea loving spirit of the owner and also keen surfer, Rodrigo Herédia. He won the title of National Champion in 1993, and in 1997, European Surfing Champion. A point is made of leaving this mark in the best corners of the house.
With incredible views of Santa Cruz Bay, the Atlantic blue embraces the 18th century Church of Santa Cruz, whose bells ring every fifteen minutes. The delight of this sound completes the orchestra of the scene, as one opens the curtain tothree different types of accommodation. The junior suites with and without swimming pool and the prime suites, these in a higher lay out and with more privacy in the outdoor area.
Com áreas que vão dos 38 aos 64 m2, cada uma das 12 suites é uma morada onde nos levitamos em silêncio absoluto. A minha Suite era uma júnior com piscina privada, e tendo visitado todas, achei a melhor escolha pois fica ao nível térreo e sentimo-nos ainda mais envolvidos pelo mar.
Com uma banheira gigante onde cabem duas pessoas e muita espuma, e com um acesso a um pequeno jardim privado com duche exterior, os interiores minimalistas com materiais endógenos fazem destas suites um dos paraísos de descanso que passarei a nomear na ilha de São Miguel.
With areas ranging from 38 to 64 m2, each of the 12 suites is space where we levitate in absolute silence. My Suite was a junior with private pool, and having visited them all, I found it the best choice as it is on the ground level and we feel even more enveloped by the sea.
With a giant two-person tub and plenty of foam, and access to a small private garden with outdoor shower, the minimalist interiors with local materials make these suites one of the resting havens I’ll claim for myself on São Miguel.
O pequeno almoço até ao meio-dia (raro e tão bom) tem uma vista extasiante e todos dias o buffet varia com nota máxima para os maracujás fresquinhos e o café sempre feito na hora em que chegamos.
The breakfast until noon (rare and so good) has a breath-taking view and every day the buffet changes, with top marks for fresh passion fruit and coffee always freshly-made when we arrived.
O SPA com uma sala de massagens e uma sala com duche Vichy com aromoterapia e cromoterapia começa a dar os primeiros passos e acredito que no próximo verão já esteja a funcionar no seu máximo potencial.
The spa with a massage room and a Vichy shower room with aromatherapy and chromotherapy is starting to take its first steps and I believe it will be working to its full potential next summer
O Sul Villas & Spa também organiza experiências como os maravilhosos passeios pedestres por toda a ilha, aulas de yoga, actividades mais radicais como canyoning, BTT, canoagem, mergulho, pesca, a par do surf, bodyboard e paddle surf. Para os amantes da natureza e da vida marinha, a observação de cetáceos e a natação com golfinhos são também possíiveis, mas aqui que ninguém nos ouve, se for como eu que delira com piscinas de água salgada e já conhece a ilha de São Miguel como a palma da mão, ficará com uma morada para relaxar e descansar à espera, como já há poucas nesta ilha.
Sul Villas & Spa also organises experiences such as wonderful walks around the island, yoga classes and more radical activities such as canyoning, mountain biking, canoeing and scuba diving,scuba diving, fishing, alongside surfing, bodyboarding and paddle surfing can also be arranged. For lovers of nature and marine life, whale watching and swimming with dolphins are also possible. But for those like myself, who are crazy about saltwater pools and who already know the island of São Miguel like the back of their hand, here you have a one of the few places on this island to relax and rest calmly.

O que adorei
A simpatia da equipa e paz nas suites assim como o pequeno almoço, até ao meio dia. Adorei o tamanho da banheira e o duche exterior ainda raro nos hotéis portugueses.
O que melhorava
Trabalhar muito bem as experiências do Spa, depois desta fase soft opening, pois este é claramente um dos melhores hotéis para descansar em São Miguel.
What I loved
The friendliness of the staff and the peace in the suites, as well as breakfast until noon. Loved the size of the bathtub and the outdoor shower, still a rarity in Portuguese hotels.
What could improved
To work on the spa experiences after this soft opening phase, as this is clearly one of the best hotels for resting on Sao Miguel.
