O caminho faz-se por uma aventurosa estrada de terra batida, ao som de um vento subtil, que nos vai preparando para a arquitectura sublime, que a equipa do arquitecto João Favila Menezes pensou para este hotel de cinco estrelas. Membro da Small Luxury Hotels of the World, e invulgar em terras algarvias este projecto de arquitectura está localizado numa área de duzentos e vinte e dois hectares na zona de Canal Malhões, colado à protegida Praia do Canal. The arrival opens the curtains to a pulsating heart in the Costa Vicentina Natural Park in the Algarve. One can feel the fluttering of the elements and the immensity of space, in an improbable architecture that we are traditionally accustomed to in these lands of the Atlantic.
The journey is made along an adventurous dirt road, accompanied by a subtle wind that prepares us for the sublime architecture that the team of architect João Favila Menezes has designed for this five-star hotel. As a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World and uncommon in the Algarve, this architectural project is located in an area of 222 hectares in the Canal Malhões zone, adjacent to the protected Praia do Canal. The hotel consists of fifty rooms and suites, all with spacious balconies or terraces with direct access to a semi-private garden area. You can expect airy panoramic views of an immense valley that embraces the Atlantic.
The entire surrounding scenery invites us to awaken our senses and expand our minds, but above all, our souls. The colors are warm, the design is minimalist, with Portuguese furniture and some highlights where a collection of art is scattered throughout the hotel, including a Mariana Vasco Costa tile wall in the hotel’s ‘Medronho’ space.
Dos cinquenta e seis quartos, vinte e cinco são Deluxe, outros vinte e cinco Junior Suites, uma Junior Suite Rooftop, duas Family Suites e uma Grand Suite Rooftop, que apresentam varandas ou terraços espaçosos com acesso direto para uma área de jardim semi-privado, oferecendo vistas panorâmicas sobre o vale para o Oceano Atlântico.
A Junior Suite Rooftop onde fiquei, além da vista tem acesso direto a um jardim privativo com espreguiçadeiras protegidas pela sombra de um guarda-sol, e são compostas por uma área de dormir e outra de estar com sofá-cama, uma casa de banho em mármore. São cinquenta metros quadrados ideais para um casal, extensível também a duas crianças. O terraço tem também a cereja no topo do bolo uma banheira de grande dimensão com uma vista até ao Oceano.
Of the fifty-six rooms, twenty-five are Deluxe, another twenty-five are Junior Suites, one Junior Suite Rooftop, two Family Suites, and one Grand Suite Rooftop, all featuring spacious balconies or terraces with direct access to a semi-private garden area, offering panoramic views over the valley to the Atlantic Ocean.
The Junior Suite Rooftop where I stayed, in addition to the view, has direct access to a private garden with sun loungers protected by the shade of an umbrella, and consists of a sleeping area and a living area with a sofa bed, a marble bathroom. They are fifty square meters ideal for a couple, also extendable to two children. The terrace also has the cherry on top of the cake, a large bathtub with a view all the way to the ocean.
Os restaurantes
O Azeitona é o restaurante principal do hotel, onde acontecem os pequenos almoços e os almoços e jantares à carta. Inspirado no Atlântico e na intensidade da Terra que circunda a propriedade, oferece uma cozinha inspirada nos sabores da região, orquestrada com ingredientes orgânicos locais frescos, com origem nas comunidades locais.
Tenha como expectativa o encontro produtos da Serra de Monchique, os queijos de Odemira, Serpa e Évora, o peixe fresco da costa algarvia, os bivalves da Ria Formosa e da Ria de Alvor, a carne de porco preto de Barrancos e Estremoz e o novilho de São Teotónio, entre muitos outros que fazem enaltecer a experiência pelos costumes das tradições, proporcionando uma experiência muito genuína.
O Zimbro é um restaurante com um ambiente mais descontraído. Localizado junto à piscina principal, é um postal bonito para algo mais leve a meio do dia ou um jantar informal com vista sobre o vale. Os seus fornos a lenha e Josper oferecem uma seleção de pratos assentes na frescura dos ingredientes incluindo peixe fresco, bivalves e mariscos da costa abertos na grelha – ao natural ou temperados com alho e coentros – frango grelhado proveniente de produtores locais, todos acompanhados com vegetais da época, com destaque para a icónica for deliciosa batata doce assada de Aljezur.
The Restaurants
The Azeitona is the hotel’s main restaurant, where breakfast and à la carte lunch and dinner are served. Inspired by the Atlantic and the intensity of the land that surrounds the property, it offers a cuisine inspired by the flavors of the region, orchestrated with fresh local organic ingredients sourced from local communities.
Expect to find products from the Serra de Monchique, cheeses from Odemira, Serpa, and Évora, fresh fish from the Algarve coast, bivalves from Ria Formosa and Ria de Alvor, black pork from Barrancos and Estremoz, and São Teotónio beef, among many others that enhance the experience with the customs of traditions, providing a very genuine experience.
The Zimbro is a restaurant with a more relaxed atmosphere. Located next to the main pool, it is a beautiful setting for a lighter lunch or a casual dinner with a view over the valley. Its wood-fired ovens and Josper offer a selection of dishes based on the freshness of the ingredients, including fresh fish, bivalves, and seafood from the grill – natural or seasoned with garlic and coriander – grilled chicken from local producers, all accompanied by seasonal vegetables, with emphasis on the delicious roasted sweet potato from Aljezur.
Na minha experiência destaco no Pequeno-Almoço despretencioso, com uns os Ovos Benedict impecáveis. Nos almoços e jantares destaco a Manteiga de Cabra cremosa tipo veludo entre o salgado e um toque de azedo impossível de resistir. Recomendo Ceviche’s no Zimbro – onde recomendo todos os almoços – e a experiência de jantar no Azeitona.
E partilhando a minha viagem do Azeitona um Amouse Bouche, tosta barriga de pargo, abacate e gel de limão, Croquetes rabo de boi, Jus de rabo de Boi, Peixe da Lota de Sagres com puré de batata Doce com legumes baby. A terminar com Mouse de Chocolate, Alcagoita e Flor de Sal e um café com petit fours ‘amendoim’ de chocolate branco.
In my experience, I would highlight the unassuming breakfast with impeccable Eggs Benedict. For lunch and dinner, I would recommend the creamy Goat Butter with a velvety texture, balanced between salty and slightly sour, which is impossible to resist. I highly recommend the ceviche at Zimbro for all lunches and the dinner experience at Azeitona.
Speaking of my journey at Azeitona, it started with an Amouse Bouche, followed by a toast with belly of red snapper, avocado, and lemon gel, Croquettes with oxtail and Oxtail Jus, Fish from Sagres Market with sweet potato puree and baby vegetables. For dessert, we had Chocolate Mousse, Alcagoita, and Flor de Sal, followed by coffee and petit fours with ‘peanut’ white chocolate.
Esteva Spa
Situado nos jardins do hotel num edifício independente, uma piscina e rodeado pela extraordinária paisagem do Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, o Esteva Spa é uma paragem obrigatória na experiência.
Com piscina interior e exterior, ambas aquecidas magnificamente envolvidas na Natuteza, o SPA tem duas salas de massagens, banho turco (hammam), sauna finlandesa a 90 graus Celsius, bio sauna a 70%, zona de relaxamento interior e exterior, e dispõe ainda de um tanque de mergulho frio e a experiência de balde de água gelada para os estoicos. O hotel inclui ainda um ginásio totalmente equipado com a Tecnogym, mas se me permitem, há experiencias lindas para sentir a natureza fora de portas.
Esteva Spa
Located in the hotel gardens in an independent building, with a pool and surrounded by the extraordinary landscape of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park, Esteva Spa is a must-stop on your experience.
With an indoor and outdoor pool, both beautifully heated and surrounded by nature, the spa has two massage rooms, a Turkish bath (hammam), a Finnish sauna at 90 degrees Celsius, a bio sauna at 70%, an indoor and outdoor relaxation area, and also features a cold plunge pool and the experience of a bucket of ice-cold water for the stoic. The hotel also includes a fully equipped gym with Technogym, but if you allow me, there are beautiful outdoor experiences to feel nature.
