Let me introduce you to the Palácio Ludovice Wine Experience Hotel that quickly captivated lovers of Lisbon’s soul. The reason is an ode to detail when it comes to preserving the private residence of João Frederico Ludovice, Architect of King D. João V in the 18th century, in a building that survived the earthquake of 1755.
Lanço por isso, ao alto nesta partilha, as minhas pétalas ao investidor Jacques Chahine e Miguel Câncio Martins (que assinou projectos como Buddha Bar em Paris, o Opium em Londres e o hotel Quinta da Comporta), ambos mentores e responsáveis pela recuperação deste palácio numa morada que estende a qualidade da marca de Lisboa.
Considerado um dos hotéis do coração pulsante da capital, já que apanha a vibração do Chiado, do Príncipe Real e do Bairro Alto, contribuindo para a preservação do ADN histórico da cidade, cada vez mais ameaçado pela gentrificação e por uma Lisboa que apesar de nossa é cada vez mais do Mundo.
Sobre a história do Palácio
No início do séc. XVIII e na sua busca de uma residência privada, o arquitecto João Federico Ludovice chega a Lisboa comissionado pelo Rei D. João V e no alto de uma das magistrais setes colinas de Lisboa, construiu aquela que seria a sua casa.

About the history of the Palace
At the beginning of the 18th century, in his search for a private residence, the architect João Federico Ludovice arrived in Lisbon commissioned by King D. João V, and on top of one of the masterful seven hills of Lisbon, he built what would be his home.

Upon arrival, we are immediately dazzled by the imposing five-story facade of a palace that invites us to enter through a majestic central door with decorated pillars, stone-bordered windows, and walls of immaculate blue and white tiles from the 18th century. In the hall, there is a giant canvas in homage to João Frederico Ludovice.
Com varandas panorâmicas sobre Lisboa – numa delas fica a suite 204 onde dormi numa viagem no tempo e sem ouvir um único ruído da azafama nocturna. Todos os quartos e as salas respiram tetos em reboco, mas os viajantes da cidade rendem-se à majestosa escadaria que honra a alma de Lisboa e onde dá gosto deambular de olhos ao alto pelos pormenores tão bem restaurados casados com a escolhas de Miguel Câncio Martins.
With panoramic balconies overlooking Lisbon – one of them being the Suite 204 where I slept on a trip through time without hearing a single noise from the nocturnal bustle. All the rooms and lounges feature plaster ceilings, but city travelers succumb to the majestic staircase that honors the soul of Lisbon, where it’s enjoyable to wander with eyes raised to the well-restored details paired with Miguel Câncio Martins’ choices.
Noutras vidas, o palacete edificado no século XVIII, foi morada do Solar do Vinho do Porto e também por isso a elevação ao vinho no hotel é enaltecida. Seja nos tapetes que elogiam vistas panorâmicas de vinhas no hall de entrada, seja nas esculturas em vime que ocupam os tetos do hall do hotel da autoria da artista Ambre Babzoe, seja na carta de vinhos que tem também a missão de representar as diferentes regiões do país. Podem esperar provas de vinho e eventos temáticos e uma loja do Instituto do Vinho e do Douro e do Porto (IVDP), com ligação também à rua, fazendo do hotel também um marco para os amantes de enologia.
A experiência Ludovice
Um dos pormenores que mais me seduziu foram as paredes forradas a azulejos seculares, meticulosamente recuperados, e que ajudam a contar a longa história do Palácio. E se a obra precisou de três anos, mais esperaríamos para ter acesso a estes sessenta e um quartos, que elogiam a alma da nossa Lisboa. Até a luz da cidade está elogiada pela claraboia quase invisível, que com candeeiros suspensos e por frescos jardins verticais, ilumina de forma invulgar o restaurante que é também a sala de pequenos almoços.
In other lives, the mansion built in the 18th century was once the home of the Solar do Vinho do Porto, and therefore the hotel’s elevation of wine is also celebrated. Whether it’s the carpets that praise panoramic views of vineyards in the entrance hall, the wicker sculptures that occupy the ceilings of the hotel’s hall by artist Ambre Babzoe, or the wine list that also aims to represent different regions of the country. Wine tastings, themed events, and a shop from the Instituto do Vinho e do Douro e do Porto (IVDP), which also connects to the street, make the hotel a landmark for wine enthusiasts as well.
The Ludovice Experience
One of the details that most seduced me were the walls lined with centuries-old tiles, meticulously restored, which help to tell the long history of the Palace. And if the work took three years, we can expect no less for access to these sixty-one rooms, which praise the soul of our Lisbon. Even the city’s light is praised by the almost invisible skylight, which, with suspended lamps and frescoed vertical gardens, unusually illuminates the restaurant that also serves breakfast.
Miguel Câncio Martins fez questão de recuperar tudo o que fosse possível e nesse testemunho, os corrimões e as escadarias em mármore, os frisos, o tijolo de burro exposto, os azulejos centenários e os tetos de reboco são verdadeiros tesouros intactos. Sempre com a supervisão da Direção Geral do Património Cultural: DGPC e antes da obra estudos históricos, ao nível da pintura, dos azulejos, da estrutura, foram estudados minuciosamente. E porque este é um hotel histórico, imaginem que mesmo no final das escavações foi encontrado um dos esqueletos mais antigos de Lisboa, com cinco mil anos.
Os quartos, incluindo três suites, e apresentam-se em sete tipologias do ‘Cozy Room’ ao ‘Ludovice Prestige’, com quatro temáticas cromáticas distintas: bege, azul, rosa e verde água, com móveis desenhados pelo arquiteto e de orgulhosa produção nacional.Eu fiquei numa suite Ludovice Prestige, a 204.
Miguel Câncio Martins made sure to recover everything possible, and in that testimony, the marble handrails and staircases, the friezes, the exposed donkey brick, the centuries-old tiles, and the plaster ceilings are true intact treasures. Always with the supervision of the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage: DGPC and before the work, historical studies at the level of painting, tiles, and structure were meticulously studied. And because this is a historic hotel, imagine that even at the end of the excavations, one of the oldest skeletons in Lisbon, dating back five thousand years, was found.
The rooms, including three suites, are presented in seven typologies from ‘Cozy Room’ to ‘Ludovice Prestige’, with four distinct chromatic themes: beige, blue, pink, and aqua green, with furniture designed by the architect and proudly of national production. I stayed in a Ludovice Prestige suite, 204.
Elevem expectativas porque há quartos com frescos originais restaurados, outros com painéis de azulejos pintados à mão e ainda outros com madeira trinchada nos tetos. Duas antigas cozinhas foram transformadas em quartos, mas nas grandes suites a estrutura permanece a original.
A quem passar pelo hotel para um copo no bar, almoçar e jantar no restaurante Federico – tanto que lhe vou dedicar outra partilha mais a frente – não deixem de subir as escadas para descobrir a lindíssima capela com símbolos maçónicos e inscrições hebraicas.
Raise your expectations because there are rooms with restored original frescoes, others with hand-painted tile panels, and still others with wooden coffered ceilings. Two former kitchens have been transformed into rooms, but the original structure remains in the large suites.
For those who stop by the hotel for a drink at the bar, lunch or dinner at the Federico restaurant – which I will dedicate another post to later – don’t forget to climb the stairs to discover the beautiful chapel with Masonic symbols and Hebrew inscriptions.

Sem dúvida uma grande homenagem à Lisboa que ainda é nossa.

Miguel Câncio Martins and Jacques Chahine always wanted to have a hotel in Lisbon, something symbolic and representative of the city. As the first building to occupy an entire block at the time of its construction, the mansion is a landmark of inspiration for Pombaline buildings, during the reconstruction of the Lisbon city by the glorious Marquês de Pombal, and for that alone it is worth a visit. Undoubtedly, a great tribute to Lisbon that is still ours.
