Switzerland’s largest city thus tops this year’s Mercer list of cities with the best quality of life. The human resources consultancy, which evaluates cities for their exceptional standards of living, infrastructure, cultural scene, housing, socio-cultural environment, purchasing power, travel, traffic, air quality and access to education, has named Zurich the best of 2024. The top position is driven by its excellent public services, low crime rates and a cultural scene that is diverse between traditions, which the Swiss preserve in an excellent way, and contemporaneity, with efficient and sustainable infrastructures.
Porque abro os panos a 2025, fiz questão de nomear o Baur au Lac, o hotel histórico que pulsa no coração de Zurique. A experiência intemporal tem como morada um hotel familiar de sétima geração e que, rodeado pelo seu próprio jardim privado, oferece uma vista deslumbrante sobre o Lago de Zurique e os majestosos Alpes suíços.

Because I’m opening the curtains to 2025, I made a point of nominating Baur au Lac, the historic hotel in the heart of Zurich. The timeless experience is housed in a seventh-generation family hotel which, surrounded by its own private garden, offers a breathtaking view of Lake Zurich and the majestic Swiss Alps.
For almost two centuries, the Baur au Lac has witnessed history and played host to some of the most emblematic figures and moments. Known as ‘Zurich’s living room’, it has welcomed royalty, visionaries and Hollywood legends. From Empress Sissi of Austria to Audrey Hepburn, the hotel has been a sanctuary in Zurich for those seeking elegance, discretion and hospitality, combined with a timeless iconic history. The scene of the discussions that led to the creation of the Nobel Peace Prize, emphasising its role not just as a place to stay, but as a place where ideas and legacies are born, it seemed pertinent to highlight it in these dichotomous times that the world is going through.

Le Hall, affectionately known as one of the hotel’s most charismatic lounges, is the perfect setting for afternoon tea or an aperitif, where guests can enjoy homemade scones, gourmet sandwiches and haute couture pastries. Já a Brasserie Baur’s, uma versão atualizada da clássica brasserie europeia, oferece um menu que celebra a sazonalidade em pratos da gastronomia local. A carta de vinhos é uma viagem pelas melhores colheitas do mundo, complementando na perfeição a experiência, que recomendo para jantar.
Brasserie Baur’s, an updated version of the classic European brasserie, offers a menu that celebrates seasonality in dishes from the local gastronomy. The wine list is a journey through the world’s best vintages, perfectly complementing the experience, which I recommend for dinner.
No inverno, o hotel monta o Chalet au Lac no jardim. Um pequeno caminho de madeira, forrado com árvores de Natal bem iluminadas, leva-nos a um chalé de madeira. Bancos rústicos com cobertas de pelo branco, velas e trajes típicos vão transportá-lo, por momentos, para o ambiente de montanha tão característico da Suíça.
In winter, the hotel sets up the Chalet au Lac in the garden. A small wooden path lined with brightly lit Christmas trees leads to a wooden chalet. Rustic benches with white fur covers, candles and traditional costumes will transport you for a moment to the mountain atmosphere so characteristic of Switzerland.
No Baur au Lac, cada canto conta uma história. Desde o seu património cuidadosamente preservado até às suas inovações contínuas, neste hotel carismático celebra-se preservação do património e criam-se memórias a par do seu legado.
